    Michael Korson

Deputy Division Chief Michael Korson is a member of the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control Executive Management Team and has been assigned to the Department’s Northern Division since 2012.

Mr. Korson began his ABC career as an Investigator in the Santa Ana District Office in 1997. He was promoted to Supervising Investigator in the Santa Rosa District Office in 2001 and then to District Administrator in the Santa Rosa District Office in 2008. During his years in the Santa Rosa District Office, he had extensive involvement in the licensing of wineries and has been called upon to assist with winery legislation and policy decisions. He has taught thousands of winery tasting room employees about the ABC laws related to service to minors, service to obliviously intoxicated patrons and identification evaluations. 

Deputy Division Chief Korson has focused his energy on helping the department’s stakeholders enter the alcoholic beverage industry and assisting them to make informed business decisions that lead to successful ventures in California. He currently serves as the Department’s Tribal Liaison and routinely assists Tribal Governments with varied questions due to the unique situation as sovereign governments.

Mr. Korson holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from California State University, Long Beach. He is a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified instructor for Defensive Tactics and Expandable Batons.  Prior to ABC he worked for the Costa Mesa Police Department, Orange County Probation Department and the United States Customs Service. He has dedicated over three decades of public service and understands that small businesses are the backbone of the State’s economy.
