ABC Joins Initiative to Improve Representation and Experiences of Women in Policing

Sacramento – The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) is joining the 30x30 Initiative to advance the representation, experiences and well-being of women in policing.

The initiative, which includes nearly 400 federal, state and local policing agencies across the US and Canada, is a pledge that outlines a series of no- or low-cost actions policing agencies can take to support women in sworn positions.

As a 30x30 participant, ABC will take measures to ensure that policies and procedures are free of bias; promote the equitable hiring, retention and promotion of women agents; and ensure the culture is inclusive, respectful and supportive of women in all ranks.
In the upcoming months, ABC will assess where the department stands in terms of its data, policies, and other 30x30 elements to help identify areas for improvement before implementing thoughtful strategies to strengthen recruitment, hiring, retention, promotion and agency culture.

“ABC is proud to support the 30x30 Initiative,” said ABC Director Joseph McCullough. “We believe that diversity adds significant value to our department and increasing the representation of women in law enforcement helps ABC meet the needs of our communities.”
Launched in March 2021, the “30×30” name represents the initiative’s goal of increasing women in police recruit classes to 30% by 2030. According to the Bureau of Justice statistics, women currently make up less than 14% of sworn officers and 20% of recruits in state and local law enforcement agencies.
